This part of ASTM D575-91 specifies the test conditions for determining compression-deflection characteristics of rubbers based on the general principles given in Method A of the standard only.

We recommend Instron's 3300 or 5900 electromechanical testing systems for this standard.  Compression platens that are larger in diameter than that of the specimen being tested are also recommended. Platens should have rigid connections to the frame and load cell and must be rated to a load capacity which exceeds forces generated during the test.

The challenges of testing to this standard are:

  • Accurate strain measurement

Instron's Solution:

  • For improved accuracy, a linear variable displacement transformers (LVDT) can be attached to the compression platens. The use of an LVDT eliminates the measurement of extraneous compliance in the loading system, which would otherwise result in a reported deformation from the crosshead extension that is greater than the actual deformation of the specimen.

It is important to review ASTM D575-91 in order to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.

2601 Series LVDT Deflection Sensors

The 2601 series Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) displacement transducers are measuring devices that measure the displacement of the load frames of materials testing systems. They feature an LVDT as the active element, and are designed for use on both electromechanical and hydraulic Instron® testing systems.
