Impact Resistance of Composite Arrows
A manufacturer of archery supplies recently asked for assistance in configuration of an impact system to test various arrow shafts made from composite materials. The shaft of an arrow is the long thin portion that makes up the major portion of an arrow, and that connects all the parts of the arrow together. Arrows with composite shafts have a range of uses from 3-D to bow hunting. Premiere competition aluminum/carbon, or A/C/E, arrows are used primarily by Olympic-style shooters who routinely shoot at distances up to 90 meters. Arrows made with these shafts have an advantage, both in hunting and target situations because of durability. To have the same durability a comparable aluminum arrow, would need to have a much larger diameter shaft which would result in a heavier arrow. The composite shaft arrow has the advantage of flying faster. Of particular interest was how these shafts would react to an impact delivered in a 3 point bend configuration.

Impact resistance is one of the most important properties for component designers to consider, as well as the most difficult to quantify. Impact resistance is a critical measure of service life and more importantly these days, it involves the perplexing problem of product safety and liability. With the combined experience of Dynatup® and CEAST, Instron® has more than 80 years experience in designing impact testing systems to simulate real-life impact conditions.
